The first round of matches in the County Junior Netball League was played at the weekend and, as usual, the standard was high and the competition strong.
Tean Valley Shooters took on new team to the league, North Staffs, in the only game in the Under 16 Premier Division. North Staffs led by a couple of goals for most of the match but excellent work by the Tean Valley defence led by Hannah Newman gave the Tean Valley side the chance to pull even with minutes to play. Molly Johnson and Emily James converted their chances and levelled the score at 21 all. Super-sub, Robyn Spibey, was player of the match for North Staffs.
In the Under 16 Second Division, Fenton Manor B beat Stafford Emeralds by 19 goals to 16 in a very close game. Stars of the match were Chloe Goodwin for Fenton and Katie Littlewood for Stafford. Emilia Watchorn-Rice worked hard for Tean Valley Blades, but they could not contain a strong Newcastle Town Lightning team losing by 14 goals to 44. Lydia Fitzmaurice-James starred for Newcastle.

Izzy Yates was on form for Fenton while Stafford’s Katie Edwards helped keep the score so close. Tean Valley Stars and Newcastle Town Tigers both had relatively easy wins. Newcastle Town Tigers cruised to a 27 – 4 win over clubmates, Newcastle Town Panthers. Opposing centres, Claudia Dash and Lydia Heath, battled it out in the centre court and both came out as players of their respective teams.
Two of the Under 14 Division 2 matches were very close affairs. Newcastle Town Lions just had the edge over Fenton Manor B and won by 2 goals, 15-13. Elayna Proudmore from Fenton proved very useful in the mid-court but it was the Newcastle defenders, Alice Bailey and Poppy Cheffins , who gave their team the edge and enabled Emma Lakin to pop in those all important winning goals. Tean Valley Lightning won the other close encounter, beating Stafford Emeralds by just 2 goals. Laure Mellor (Lightning) and Leah Drury (Emeralds) were both very effective in defence for their teams. In the other two matches, Stafford Sapphires beat Newcastle Town Pumas by 31 goals to 5. Elena Hooker earned the player of the match award for Sapphires, while earning that award for Pumas was G Leach-Llewellyn. Tean Valley Thunder claimed the points against Fenton Manor C. Abigail Barnish shone in their attacking circle.
This is the first taste of County League netball for the girls in Year 7 and there was a great deal of excitement before and after the matches. Newcastle Town Bears beat Newcastle Town Eagles by 22 goals to 7. Goal Attacks, Grace Owen (Bears) and Eden Nicely (Eagles) were voted players of the match by their opponents. Tean Valley Angels had a little more play in their match versus Newcastle Town Swans and won by 8 goals to 4. Sally Emery was effective as Centre but also played well at Goal Attack for Angels. Hannah Taylor was Swans’ star player.
